Even in the opposition’s sights, the vice-leadership of the Lula (PT) government should not be left in the Senate, as far as the Planalto Palace is concerned. An assistant to the president says that the senator, who is also leader of the PDT, has always helped the government in Congress. Removing Weverton from office, he continues, would only leave him even more exposed.
In December, the PF (Federal Police) appointed him as the “political pillar” of the scandal at the INSS (National Institute of Social Security) — giving (Mixed Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry), starting next month.
After the operation, in December, federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar (União Brasil-AL), rapporteur of the commission, told Sheet that the senator needs to testify. Weverton denies the PF’s accusation and claims to be calm. According to him, his innocence will be fully recognized.
Weverton is the rapporteur for the appointment of the minister of the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), Jorge Messias, to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) and is trying to repeat the work done when, in 2023.
The president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), has not yet given any signal about Messias’ hearing. During the event that marked three years since the January 8th attack, the government leader, senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), spoke with Messias and told the press he was confident of approval.
“I’m working on the votes, but I think he [Messias] will have the votes to be approved”, Wagner told journalists at Palácio do Planalto.
