Thiago Wild breaks fast and advances in Australian Open qualifier

In the Australian Open qualifier, Thiago Wild won again on the professional circuit. The Brazilian, currently 216th in the ATP rankings, beat Ecuadorian Álvaro Guillen Meza, 193rd, by 7/5 6/3 in 1h34min of the match in Melbourne, Australia.

With the result, Wild awaits the winner between the Italians Francesco Maestrelli and Lorenzo Giustino. To break through the qualifiers and reach the main draw, Thiago will need three wins.

This was the 26-year-old Paraná native’s first triumph after more than six months of fasting. His last victory had been at the Modena Challenger, a tournament in which the Brazilian was runner-up. Therefore, the last triumph before this was in the semi-final, against the Swiss Jérôme Kym.

Other Brazilians are also competing to qualify for the first major tournament of the season. Gustavo Heide also advanced to the second round. João Reis and Laura Pigossi lost in the initial round.

In the main draw, Bia Haddad Maia and João Fonseca are guaranteed.
