- Putin distanced himself from the US-Denmark dispute over Greenland.
- The US wants to buy Greenland for its national security.
- Putin recalled the Russian sale of Alaska to the United States in 1863.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to distance himself from the dispute over Greenland between the United States, Denmark and other European countries. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency. “This definitely does not concern us,Putin said at a meeting of the National Security Council in Moscow on Wednesday, stressing that the US and Denmark must deal with the issue between themselves.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized that the US needs to acquire the autonomous Danish island of Greenland to ensure national security. The head of the Kremlin recalled that Russia also has experience in selling Arctic territories to the US, when in 1863 it sold Alaska to Washington for $7.2 million.
“At today’s prices and taking into account inflation over the past decades, this amount would correspond to approximately 158 million,” Putin said. DPA reports that the dispute over Greenland between the US and Europe suits Russia in an effort to weaken support for Ukraine, against which it has been waging a full-scale war since February 2022. Moscow views Trump’s justification for seeking to acquire the Arctic island as a defense of territorial aggression, similar to when it illegally annexed Crimea in 2014.
The Russian president also commented on Trump’s initiative to create a Peace Council. Putin emphasized that he is willing to pay a billion dollars for membership, but only from funds frozen in the US. “In addition, the remaining funds from frozen assets in the US can be used to rebuild war-torn territories after the conclusion of peace between Russia and Ukraine,” he said, confirming a meeting with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday.
