The Šiveluč volcano in Kamchatka in the Russian Far East spewed ash to a height of almost nine kilometers, reported the Russian Academy of Sciences on the social network. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency. An orange alert for air traffic has been issued for the area around the volcano – the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) said on Telegram.
Šiveluč is one of the largest and most active volcanoes on the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, one of the most intense volcanic regions in the world. At the same time, it is the northernmost volcano on the peninsula. The nearest inhabited area from this 3300 meter high volcano is 47 kilometers away.
There are about 160 volcanoes in Kamchatka, but only about two dozen of them are active. The area is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
