People across Europe are taking to the streets to protest against the violent dissolution of Kurdish self-government in Syria by the new regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa: the dream of “Rojava”, a Kurdish autonomous region in northeastern Syria, has been shattered. In Iraq, on the other hand, the Kurds have been ruling their own autonomous region for a long time. But they are so divided internally that they are still unable to form a government in Erbil 15 months after the Kurdish parliamentary elections in October 2024.
