The decision by the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), to remain in the state to seek re-election – which was understood as the final word after seeing former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in prison, in Brasília – heated up the debate and movements for the vice-president spot on the ticket.

There are three names in the running: that of the current vice president, Felício Ramuth (PSD), that of the secretary of Institutional Relations, president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab, and that of the president of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo, André do Prado (PL). Aides and people close to them report that the tendency is for the vacancy to be maintained in the PSD, an agreement signed in the 2022 election. The PL, however, has been applying pressure, arguing that the party has the largest benches both in São Paulo and nationally, and because it is the party linked to the Bolsonaro family.

. The name that will run for the position is still being defined by the party. The second seat in the Upper House should go to the PP, owned by the former Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite.

In addition to understanding that the PL has already been contemplated, Tarcísio has a preference, according to allies, for the continuity of “what is already working”. In other words: to keep Ramuth in post. The current deputy is known as someone who is loyal and discreet.

however, has spoken publicly about his desire to occupy the position. For this reason, according to sources, he has not yet signaled to Tarcísio that he is ready to leave the secretariat he commands. At the end of the year, he said he would leave office to focus on the election year.

The fact is that all the names aim for something much bigger: the succession of Palácio dos Bandeirantes. After all, with Tarcísio re-elected in 2026 – and many allies are betting on his victory “with ease”, given the governor’s approval numbers – the vice-president would come out ahead in a dispute in the next election, in 2030, when Tarcísio will be able to run for Presidency of the Republic.
