US President Donald Trump said this Saturday (31) that India will buy Venezuelan oil, instead of continuing to acquire the commodity from Iran.
“We’ve already finalized the concept of the deal,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Florida from Washington, D.C.
Trump’s comment came a day after the United States told New Delhi it could soon resume purchases of Venezuelan oil to help replace Russian oil imports, three sources familiar with the matter spoke to Reuters.
The US effort to supply Venezuelan crude oil to India comes as Washington seeks to reduce the oil revenue that funds Russia in its war in Ukraine.
It is worth remembering that Trump imposed 25% tariffs on countries that buy Venezuelan oil, including India, in March last year.
The Republican also said on Saturday that China would be welcome to reach a deal with the US to buy Venezuelan oil.
