Iran’s supreme leader says any US attack would lead to ‘regional war’

He stated, in his account on X, that the United States must know that “if they start a war this time, it will be a regional war”.

The warning comes amid fluctuating political tension between the two countries, even in the context in which US President Donald Trump has threatened to attack Iran militarily in the face of the repression of recent local protests.

Khamenei also addressed a crowd at his compound in Tehran as Iran marked the start of a series of commemorations of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

At the time, according to the Associated Press (AP), he described the US as interested “in its oil, natural gas and other mineral resources, stating that they wanted to “take possession of this country, just as they controlled it before”.

The leader added, according to the AP, that Iran “will not be unfair to anyone” and that it does not plan to attack any country. “But if anyone shows greed and wants to attack or harass, the Iranian nation will deal them a severe blow,” he declared.
