With goals from newcomer Gabriel Paulista and Yuri Alberto, Timão wins its second title with Dorival Júnior
O Corinthians overcame Flamengo’s favoritism and won the Supercopa Rei title. This Sunday, Timão beat the rubro-negro 2-0 at Mané Garrincha, in Brasília, in the decision between the current champions of the Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil.
The first goal of the title was scored by defender Gabriel Paulista, recently signed at the start of the season, in the 25th minute of the first half. In stoppage time of the final stage, Yuri Alberto extended the goal for Timão.
The Rio team had the debut of Lucas Paquetá, who this week became the biggest signing in the history of Brazilian football (42 million euros).
The midfielder entered the second half, but managed to produce little, as Flamengo played the entire final stage with 10 on the field due to Carrascal’s expulsion for a challenge with Breno Bidon at the end of the first half.
The title maintains Corinthians’ good phase within the four lines – while outside it it accumulates a stratospheric debt of almost R$3 billion – and is also another blow for Flamengo at the beginning of the year.
A red-black team accumulates its third consecutive defeat at the beginning of the season. Against Fluminense (Carioca), São Paulo (Brasileirão) and now Corinthians.
Timão has now won its third title in the last 12 monthshaving also won the and last year and now the two in the Super Cup.
How was the game
There are those who believe that football teams are a reflection of their fans on the field. Coincidence or not, the thousands of Corinthians who were present in Brasília, whose number of Flamengo fans is much higher – including Mané Garrincha – pushed the team to go after the opponent at the beginning of the match.
The São Paulo team produced the first dangerous move of the match, with Memphis almost completing Yuri’s cross towards the goal, and demonstrated a willingness to put pressure on their rival’s ball.
The Cariocas demonstrated the quality to escape pressure by touching the ball. Carrascal, the team’s driving force, served as the team’s release and Plata, on the right side, provided work in individual plays. Flamengo almost opened the scoring with a shot from outside Pulgar’s area. Goalkeeper Hugo Souza, twice, prevented the red-black goal almost over the line, with shots from Pedro and Carrascal.
Quick in the transition, Corinthians did not find themselves on the ropes thanks to the ability of Bidon and André, both “children of Terrão”, to organize plays in midfield. In the 25th minute, Gustavo Henrique headed a corner kick and Gabriel Paulista headed the ball into the back of the net with his left foot. Punishment for Flamengo, who were better in the match.
Despite the goal, Flamengo continued with more possession of the ball and greater presence in the opponent’s field, but found no solutions to break through the Corinthians defense. Unlit, Arrascaeta barely touched the ball. The other number 10 in the match, Memphis Depay, had a great chance to increase the score in the 37th minute after a counterattack by Bidon, but Rossi prevented the black and white team’s second.
Just before halftime, another event happened that changed the match. Carrascal hit Breno Bidon with his arm. Initially, the referee on the field did not call the play and ended the first half.
However, before the game resumed in the final stage, after the break, Rafael Klein reviewed the move in the VAR and sent off Carrascal, leaving Flamengo with one man less on the field.
Even so, the red-black team continued to press. But Corinthians were again in danger and found the net with Memphis Depay, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside by Yuri Alberto at the beginning of the play. However, the broadcast did not show the move being reviewed and having the lines drawn by the VAR.
