Slovak skiers were hit by an avalanche in Switzerland, one did not survive

An avalanche buried four Slovak skiers in the Piz Alv area in Graubünden, Switzerland. One of them could not be saved and another was injured, local portals report on the case.

An avalanche buried a group of four Slovak skiers in the Swiss resort of Piz Alv in Ponterisme, located in the canton of Graubünden, on Saturday afternoon. One skier could not be saved, another member of the expedition was injured, reports TASR based on reports from the GRHeute and 20min.ch portals.

According to the announcement of the cantonal police in Graubünden, the headquarters of the Rega (Swiss air rescue service) received a report of the accident on Saturday shortly after 5:30 p.m. directly from one of the members of the four-member group of skiers. The injured man, who managed to be freed from under the snow, was taken by rescuers to Oberengadin Hospital in Samedan.

The intervention of rescuers

Another, 53-year-old man, who was buried by the avalanche, was found dead by rescuers. Dog handlers from the Alpine Rescue Service and two Rega helicopters were involved in the rescue operation. The exact circumstances of the tragedy are being investigated by the cantonal police of Graubünden together with the prosecutor’s office.
