Behind the scenes of Rio politics, a question has been circulating insistently: why won’t Carlos Bolsonaro take the seat currently occupied by his brother, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), to run for the Senate in 2026?

According to sources heard privately by the column, the Carlos’ decision was taken even before Flávio was elevatedby his father Jair Bolsonaro, as presidential candidate. Since then, Rio’s licensed councilor has repeated to allies that he does not intend to go back.

The assessment around Carlos is that his bet on Santa Catarina is consolidated. The state, considered by Bolsonarists as the most conservative in the country, would be favorable ground for a candidacy for the Senate, with real chances of success.

Close interlocutors claim that he rules out any movement to return to Rio de Janeiro to fill the vacancy that will be left by his brother.

A race for the Senate in Santa Catarina, however, has caused noise internal. The dispute for support from governor Jorginho Mello (PL-SC) heightened tensions in the local right-wing camp and culminated in complaints about the party’s lack of support.

The PL in the state chose to support the attempt to re-elect senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC)a movement that redesigned alliances and left members of the acronym unsatisfied — in a scenario that still promises new chapters behind the scenes.
