Mercadona reinforces its bet and opens a second store in this city: salaries can reach €20,915

South Expansion: Mercado announces entry into the Algarve with two stores and 200 new jobs

Mercadona will move forward with the opening of a second supermarket in a city where its presence has proved decisive since its arrival on the local market. This is Viseu, where the Spanish chain is expected to open the new store in April, consolidating its investment in a region where it opened for the first time in 2022.

According to Mercadona, the opening of the new space will allow the creation of 65 jobs. All vacancies include an initial training period and a permanent contract, following the stable employment model that the company has been applying in its stores in Portugal.

For 20-hour weekly contracts, the annual base salary is 7,481.95 euros gross. In the 40-hour regime, the value starts at 15,293 euros and can reach 20,915 euros, depending on internal progression.

Strengthening presence in a strategic city

With this new opening, Mercadona now has two stores in Viseu, reinforcing its coverage in the municipality and proximity to a greater number of consumers. The second unit will be located in a different area from the first, allowing the brand’s area of influence to be expanded and access improved for those living outside the urban center.

The first Mercadona store in Viseu opened in October 2022, on Estrada Nacional 231, in the parish of Ranhados.

The space has approximately 1,900 square meters and includes several sections, including Butchery, Fishmonger, Delicatessen, Bakery and Pastry Shop, Perfumery, Home Care and Pets, Fruits and Vegetables, Wine Cellar and a Ready to Eat area, with self-service and several meal options.

The operation in Viseu is part of the company’s national expansion plan, which entered Portugal in 2019 with the opening of the first store in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia. Since then, the chain has been growing gradually, favoring medium-sized cities and urban areas with high consumption potential.

Mercadona currently employs more than five thousand people in Portugal and is present in several districts, such as Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Setúbal, Santarém, Viseu, Leiria, Lisbon and Coimbra. The opening scheduled for February 24th, in Lumiar, in Lisbon, will allow the company to reach the mark of 70 stores nationwide.

Sustained expansion and investment in employment

Founded in 1977 and headquartered in Valencia, Mercadona today has more than 1,600 stores and a team of around 110,000 workers.

In Portugal, the brand has gained visibility mainly through its offer of private label products, which have become a regular presence in many consumers’ daily purchases.

According to it, the opening of the second store in Viseu reflects the company’s confidence in the performance of the local operation and the intention to continue investing in stable employment, continuous training and internal progression, in a market that it considers strategic for its growth in the country.
