An easyJet flight that departed from the island of Sal, in Cape Verde, bound for Lisbon, last Sunday, February 1, ended up landing in Tenerife, where the passengers were accommodated in a hotel with all expenses covered. According to the easyJet press office, the diversion occurred because, “as the team of engineers were unable to resolve a problem, the flight was postponed until the evening of the following day and a replacement aircraft was provided to continue the flight to Lisbon”.
The lowcost company also assured that “hotel accommodation and meals were guaranteed to affected customers”, highlighting the effort to minimize the impact of the disruption.
According to the Lusa news agency, incidents of this type force the company to quickly coordinate logistics and communication with passengers, ensuring that everyone is informed and assisted. Quick response and the provision of alternatives, such as temporary accommodation, are common practices in situations of technical unforeseen events on international flights.
New routes from Lisbon and Porto
It should be noted that the routes between Portugal and Cape Verde operated by easyJet are relatively recent. In October last year, the airline began connecting Lisbon and Porto to Santiago (Praia), São Vicente and Boa Vista, expanding the offer that until now only included the island of Sal.
According to the portal, the company aims to make travel “more accessible” and reinforce “historical, commercial and cultural links” between the two countries. The publication adds that these routes allow tourists to explore different islands in the archipelago directly.
On the island of Sal, says the same source, passengers will find wide beaches and the village of Santa Maria, where “life is made between live music, fresh fish and a welcoming atmosphere”. In the city of Praia, writes the portal, it is possible to visit colorful markets and experience the intense urban life of the largest island in Cape Verde.
São Vicente and nautical activities
In São Vicente, the website explains, the bohemian city surrounded by beaches offers a bay suitable for water sports, ideal for those looking for water activities and local culture.
In turn, Boa Vista offers “golden dunes, wild beaches and almost untouched natural landscapes”, and is also one of the best places in the archipelago to observe sea turtles.
easyJet maintains flights to the island of Sal, starting in 2024, according to the same source, allowing passengers to book trips directly from Lisbon or Porto. “With these new routes, easyJet brings Portugal even closer to Cape Verde, making an authentic destination full of memorable experiences accessible.”
