The Science and Technology Commission (CCT) of the Federal Senate quickly approved a bill that drastically restricts advertising by sports betting houses, the so-called “bets”, in Brazil. The proposal, which now goes to the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), prohibits advertisements in traditional media outlets, social networks and even direct sponsorship of sporting clubs and events.

What the approved project envisages:

The text establishes a strict siege on the betting sector, including:

  • Total Advertising Veto: Prohibition of advertisements on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and social networks.
  • End of Sponsorships: Football clubs and sporting events would be prohibited from printing bet brands on their uniforms and arenas.
  • Technological Restrictions: Prohibition of pre-installation of betting applications on devices such as cell phones, tablets and smart TVs.
  • Heavy Sanctions: Failure to comply with the rules can result in anything from warnings to fines of R$5,000 to R$10 million, in addition to the suspension of the right to operate in the country.
