The 2026 edition is open for registration until February 15th. The award can be given to individuals, institutions or non-governmental organizations that have significantly contributed to press freedom around the world.
Organized by the award, it was created in 1997 in honor of Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano, murdered in front of the newspaper’s office The Spectator in 1986, in Bogotá, Colombia.
The awards ceremony will take place on May 3, World Press Freedom Day. The winner will be awarded a prize of US$25,000 (approximately R$105,000).

In 2025, in recognition of the vehicle’s resistance to state repression, even after the arrest and expulsion of its leaders and the confiscation of its assets. Currently, most of the newsroom works in exile, operating from countries such as Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico, Germany and the United States.
