A young swamp capybara from the National Zoo in Bojnice died. According to the findings of the zoo so far, his death should have occurred during the night on Friday in the pool. “This news hit us hard, and we are all the more saddened by the fact that it is a young animal that quickly found its way to visitors,” the zoo writes on its social network.

“Capybaras are species that are naturally tied to water and move in it daily. Despite all the standard safety measures, unfortunately, sometimes an unpredictable situation happens that cannot be prevented,” said the zoo.

The little capybara was born at the beginning of January to the female Bára. The Bojnica zoo added two swamp capybaras to its animal collection last year, the male is named Kápo and the female is Bára. The largest rodent in the world grows to a height of 50 to 60 centimeters, has a length of approximately 130 centimeters and can weigh 50 to 70 kilograms as an adult. It is found in the wild in the north and in the center of South America. A smaller invasion group has also been observed in Florida. It lives for six to 12 years, reaching maturity at around 15 months of age.
