The capital of the Netherlands will be the first city in the world to ban advertising considered harmful to the climate, in public spaces.
The measure had already been proposed in 2020. It will move forward this year, more precisely on May 1st; and places Amsterdam as an unprecedented city in this context, according to .
The proposal was approved by the Amsterdam City Council about two weeks ago. It was a proposal from the environmental party GroenLinks and the animal protection party Partij voor de Dieren.
The new law is clear: in public spaces, and on the public transport network, It is not permitted to advertise air travel, cruises and gasoline-powered cars.
“Advertisements that present fossil fuels as something normal worsen climate disruption and have no place in a city − or in a country − that complies with the Paris Agreement”, according to Femke Sleegers, coordinator of the initiative.
Vice-President Melanie van der Horst did not want this measure to be applied in May, preferring a “reasonable transition period”.
Climate Minister Sophie Hermans does not support such a measure across the country; gives priority to local measures.
