President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) stated this Friday (6) that releasing the former president (PL), would be “demoralizing the seriousness of the Supreme Court that condemned him” for an attempted coup d’état.
“Do you think that if you have a crazy dog trapped and you let it go, it will be more tame? It will bite someone. This citizen [Bolsonaro] tried to destroy Brazilian democracy. This citizen, who was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison, had a plan to kill Lula, the [Geraldo] Alckmin and Alexandre de Moraes. You just condemn and, the next day, someone passes a law to release the guys, to reduce their sentences?”, asked Lula, in an interview with TV Aratu, in Bahia.
The president made the statements when defending that he had done “his part” with what was approved, which aimed to reduce the sentences for those involved in the attacks on January 8, 2023, benefiting Bolsonaro.
“I vetoed it because I don’t agree. This citizen [Bolsonaro] have to be arrested. One fine day there may be an amnesty for him, as there was after 1964, 15 years later. But you can’t play judgment. If you release him, you demoralize the seriousness of the Supreme Court that sentenced him,” he said.
The president also stated that his predecessor “is ashamed because he had the machine in his hand and thought he was going to win the elections”. “And when he lost, he didn’t even have the humility to behave like someone who lost,” he said.
