Negotiations cancelled
The State Department announcement came after a White House spokesman said overnight that US Vice President JD Vance had canceled a planned trip to Switzerland. He planned to meet with Iranian negotiators on Friday to begin talks on a final deal between Tehran and Washington to end the war. This was reportedly due to logistical difficulties related to the discussions.
The announcement of Vance’s canceled trip followed a report by Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television, affiliated with the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah, that Iran had delayed sending its delegation to Switzerland because of the ongoing Israeli military operation in Lebanon.
Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday night that ends the war in the Middle East. On Thursday, the sixty-day period for negotiations between the two countries on the final peace agreement began.
