Decision should end military education, scholarships and certification programs, according to the entity
The Pentagon will cut all its academic ties with Harvard Universitywhich will end military education, scholarships and certification programs, the entity said in a statement on Friday (6).
The measure is the most recent chapter of the President Donald Trump’s government dispute with the prestigious Ivy League educational institution, which he accuses of promote “woke” ideologya pejorative term used by the radical right for diversity policies.
“For too long, this Department has sent our best and brightest officers to Harvard, hoping that the university would better understand and value our warrior class,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said in the bulletin.
“Instead, too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard: with heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks,” he added.
The Pentagon has indicated that the severing of ties will begin in 2026-2027 academic yearand that military personnel who are studying in progress will be able to complete them.
In another post on the social network X, Hegseth used his preferred term for the Department of Defense: “Harvard is ‘woke’; the Department of War is not.”
The secretary stated that the Pentagon will review its ties with all Ivy League universities for military training and education.
The Trump administration’s pressure on these institutions has led higher education officials to express concern about the possibility of erosion of academic freedom.
