The president (PT) launched a political operation on two fronts to try to strengthen his candidacy for re-election and isolate his likely opponent, the senator (PL).
The PT member is trying to remove the main parties from the center of Flávio’s candidacy. Furthermore, in a move considered more delicate, he was receptive to the idea of changing his running mate to try to add him to his formal alliance – which would give him more campaign time on TV and reinforce the broad front message propagated by him in the 2022 election.
Lula’s order, already assimilated by the PT, is to expand its range of alliances as much as possible for the election. PT organizers believe that the majority of the electorate has already decided which side they will take, and that only around 10% of the votes are up for grabs. Therefore, any help to attract more voters is valuable.
“We have to work, make alliances to win the elections. We don’t have all that ball in every state, there are states that we need to be part of. We need to decide if we want to win or if we want to lose. How I want to win, Edinho [Silva, presidente do PT]you will have to make alliances”, declared the president at the PT’s anniversary event this Saturday (7).
The attempt to attract the MDB is sensitive because it would involve removing the current vice-president from the ticket, (). He is close to the head of government and wants to remain in office in the event of re-election. Furthermore, powerful MDB directorates, such as those in and from Rio Grande do Sul, must resist an alliance.
As the Panel column showed, Sheet, which has three pre-candidates for president. Of the party’s 27 state directorates, 17 would be far from Lula and 10 would be close to the PT government.
There is a risk that Lula will hurt and lose his current vice-president and the alliance will be defeated at the Emedebista convention, making the coalition unviable. Alckmin has already told the PT leadership that, if he is not on the presidential ticket, he will support Lula’s re-election without running for anything.
The president discussed the matter in December with the Lulista senators (MDB-AL) and Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM). A new meeting was scheduled, but has not been done so until now.
On Thursday (5), however, . The phrase was understood as a sign that he wants the vice president to run for some position and reinforce his platform in the state with the largest electorate.
Emedebists aware of the articulation assess that the declaration was a kind of “ok” to move forward in an attempt to form a majority in the party in favor of the alliance. This group, however, still wants the president to make stronger gestures.
Two days later, during the PT’s 46th anniversary celebration this Saturday (7), in Salvador, the president patted Alckmin saying that he was lucky with his deputies: “Geraldo Alckmin was one of those things that God made happen in my life. He is an extraordinary man that I respect and admire.” The deputy was present at the event.
In the meeting with the two emedebistas, Lula said that he saw the MDB as the only chance to add a new party to his alliance – which must include left-wing acronyms.
Renan told the PT member that the only way to try to take the MDB into the coalition would be to offer the vice president, because that would give a strong argument at the convention that will decide the party’s path in the election. Party conventions will be from July 20th to August 5th.
There are three emedebistas tipped to be Lula’s vice-president, if the arrangement works out: the Minister of Transport; the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho; and the Minister of Planning, .
The main speculated destination for Tebet, however, is a candidacy for senator for São Paulo. There is a possibility that she will change parties, since the São Paulo MDB supports the Bolsonaro governor ().
Lula’s allies in the PT and MDB, however, are still trying to find a solution that would allow Tebet to be a candidate and support Lula’s re-election without changing parties. Both the president of the PT, Edinho Silva, and Eduardo Braga want to talk to the president of the MDB, Baleia Rossi, about the topic.
The main obstacle to an alliance between Lula and the São Paulo MDB is the proximity of the mayor of São Paulo, the emedebista, to Tarcísio. The governor was fundamental to the .
It helps Lula that . Right-wing and center-wing political forces wanted him to contest the Palácio do Planalto and .
In addition to trying to attract the MDB, Lula seeks to obtain the neutrality of the main parties in the center in the national dispute. The PT member’s objective is that these parties do not give formal support to Flávio Bolsonaro and that their national leadership does not hinder his search for alliances with local leaders.
One of the main movements in this direction, revealed by Sheetit was Lula’s meeting with the president of , , in which . The counterpart would be to facilitate Nogueira’s re-election as senator in Piauí.
Deputies and senators affiliated with the PP and originating from regions where Lula is most popular, such as the Northeast, take it for granted that the party will release its members to associate with the presidential candidate they prefer.
The president also targets local leaders of the . One of the states where this effort must be greater is Ceará. The main leader of PT Ceará, the Minister of Education, tries to prevent União Brasil from supporting (PSDB) in the dispute for local government.
Lula believes it is essential to defeat Ciro and re-elect governor Elmano de Freitas (PT).
The PP announced the formation of a party federation with União Brasil, . The two parties, together, would constitute the largest group and would be forced to act together in the national election. Ciro Nogueira is one of the leaders of this association, which has not yet been definitively recognized by the (Superior Electoral Court).
This group wanted to support Tarcísio for president. Without Tarcísio’s candidacy, the priority became electing as many congressmen as possible, which increases the possibility of alliances between Lula and state directories of these parties.
The President of the Republic also , . Motta’s party, the Republicans, also has sectors that want to contest the election associated with Lula. The deputy has participated in the President of the Republic’s articulations, even outside his party. He mediated the meeting between the PT member and Ciro Nogueira.
Lula, Motta and several other deputies (4). The head of government minimized possible friction due to parties that have ministries launching candidates for president of the Republic. The message was mainly directed to , which has three ministers and three pre-candidates for the Planalto (Ronaldo Caiado, Eduardo Leite and Ratinho Jr.).
