Vietnam has begun construction of the Trong Dong Stadium, a project that promises to become the largest in the world in terms of audience capacity. The multipurpose arena will have the capacity to 135 thousand spectators and began construction in December, with completion scheduled for August 2028.

The investment will be more than 925 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND), a value equivalent to around R$185 billion. With this, Trong Dong will surpass the Rungrado 1º de Maio Stadium, in North Korea, which holds 114 thousand people, and also the Hassan II Stadium, in Morocco, still under construction for the 2030 World Cup, with an estimated capacity of 115 thousand seats.

The architectural design is inspired by the Dong Son bronze drum, an artifact considered sacred in Vietnam and a symbol of the country’s ancient civilization. The object represents values such as community spirit, strength and longevity, concepts that guided the arena’s design.

With a retractable roof, the stadium will be part of a multi-sports complex covering around 9 thousand hectares, an area equivalent to 90 million square meters. The design of Trong Dong also took reference from arenas such as Wembley, in England, the Bird’s Nest, in China, and the Lusail Stadium, in Qatar.

In addition to sports matches, the space was planned to host major events, such as concerts, festivals and exhibitions, as part of Vietnam’s strategy of positioning itself as a host for large-scale international events.
