António José Seguro, 63 years old, won Portugal’s presidential elections this Sunday (8). The inauguration will be on March 9th.
He presented himself as a “safe option” to lead the country during the campaign.
In 2014, the former leader of the Socialist Party abandoned political life after losing the leadership to former Prime Minister António Costa.
Insurance in June last year.
He is a businessman in the areas of tourism, agriculture and food products, having a degree in International Relations from the Autonomous University of Lisbon.
He also has a master’s degree in Political Science from the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.
Seguro’s campaign for president attracted exceptionally broad support, with prominent conservatives—including former president Aníbal Cavaco Silva, ministers from the current center-right government, and most first-round candidates—declaring their support to prevent a Ventura victory.
Analysts say that cross-sectional support for different parties reflects concerns about the rise of the right in Portugal, where Ventura’s Chega party has emerged as a powerful political force.
