The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, made a statement on national radio and TV on the night of this Sunday, 8th, to celebrate the return to classes in public schools this week. Santana took the opportunity to highlight the advances made in Education and the gains obtained with the decision to restrict the use of cell phones in the classroom.
According to the minister, after a year of the restriction, the results are beginning to appear and the restrictive measure on cell phone use reinforced the focus on learning. “Cell phones and technology in the classroom are only used as pedagogical tools,” said the minister, highlighting that the government has increased connectivity in public schools from 45% in 2023 to 70% in 2026.
“There are many reasons to celebrate.” Santana highlighted the construction of new schools, daycare centers and sports courts and the advancement of comprehensive education in the country. According to him, in 2023, Brazil had 17% of municipalities with a comprehensive education policy. Now, according to the minister, 91% of Brazilian cities adopt the policy.

The minister also spoke about the growth in the literacy rate in the country. According to him, in 2024, the percentage of children who were literate on time practically doubled, going from 36% of children to 60%. He also highlighted the Pé-de-Meia program, which grants a monthly benefit of R$200 to young people who are in high school and remain enrolled. According to him, the program reaches almost 6 million young people, which has caused school dropout rates in this age group to fall by half.
Regarding the National High School Examination (Enem), Santana said that there has been a 40% growth in recent years and highlighted that Sisu 2026 is the largest in history, with 5 thousand new vacancies offered.
