Analysis: Lula seeks to shield himself from suspicions about his son

The opposition in the National Congress intends to insist on summoning Luiz Cláudio Lula da Silva, known as Lulinha, to testify at the INSS CPMI. The analysis is by Jussara Soares, policy analyst at CNN Brazil.

The president of the commission, senator Carlos Viana, has reinforced this intention, while the government tries to shield itself from the suspicions that fall on Lula’s son.

In December last year, the commission tried , who is vice-president of one of the unions investigated in the irregular INSS discount scheme. At the time, the government managed to block the summons with 19 votes against and 12 in favor.

In a recent interview with UOL, President Lula stated that he had directly questioned his son about possible involvement in the case and assured that, if there was anything irregular, he would.

The statement is seen as a strategy to shield the government from suspicion, adopting a discourse that there will be punishment “whoever it hurts”.

Suspicions and ongoing investigation

Speculation indicates that Lulinha was an alleged hidden partner of Antônio Carlos Camilo Antunes, known as the “INSS bald man”, identified as a lobbyist in the scheme. However, to date, there are no concrete facts that prove this connection, and the Federal Police continue to investigate the case.

and requested access to the INSS investigation files. For the opposition, the case represents a political opportunity in an election year, with the potential to exploit on social media any testimony from the president’s family members at CPMI.

The government, in turn, is concerned about the possibility of the commission becoming a political platform, regardless of whether there is guilt or not, and must organize itself again to try to avoid the summons.
