Russia accuses the US of ‘asphyxiating’ Cuba in the midst of the energy crisis

On Monday, the 9th, Russia accused the United States of applying “asphyxiating measures” against Cuba, a traditional ally of Moscow, in the midst of an energy crisis on the Caribbean island, worsened by American sanctions.

“The situation in Cuba is really critical,” declared Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov during his daily press conference.

“The suffocating measures imposed by the United States are causing many difficulties for the country. We are studying possible solutions with our Cuban friends, at least to provide whatever assistance we can,” he added.

Russia accuses the US of 'asphyxiating' Cuba in the midst of the energy crisis

Cuba is facing a very serious energy crisis after the end of oil supplies from Venezuela, after the fall of dictator Nicolás Maduro, and in the face of Washington’s threats to impose tariffs on countries that sell oil to the island.

Cuban authorities have informed airlines operating in the country that the supply of kerosene will be suspended for a month starting this Monday at midnight, due to the energy crisis, they announced to AFP on Sunday, the 8th, an executive from a European company.

According to this source, the measure will force companies operating long-distance routes to make a “technical stopover” on return flights to guarantee their supply of kerosene.

The Cuban government announced on Friday, the 6th, a package of emergency measures, including a four-day work week and teleworking at state-owned companies, in addition to restrictions on the sale of fuel to face the energy crisis.

It was also announced the reduction of bus and train services between provinces and the closure of some tourist establishments.

After cutting off supplies to Venezuela following the capture of dictator Maduro on January 3, Donald Trump signed a decree last week indicating that the United States could impose tariffs on countries that sell oil to Havana.

Furthermore, Trump assured that Mexico, which has been supplying oil to Cuba since 2023, will stop doing so.

To justify its policy, Washington invokes the “exceptional threat” represented by Cuba, located just 150 km off the coast of Florida. Havana says Trump intends to “asphyxiate” the island. Source: Associated Press.
