Mayor of (SP), the largest city administered by the country, decided to leave the party, to which he has been a member for almost 20 years.
“The PSDB has lost its essence, its guidelines, its dialogue with society. It has become a notary party, which does not respect militancy”, says he, who is concluding his second term in the municipality of ABC in São Paulo.
He states that he has not yet defined his party future and that he will be without a party for a while. He says he should run in the 2026 election, but has not yet decided what position.
Morando’s departure is yet another blow for the Tucanos, who have been losing important personnel quickly in recent years. Recently, another mayor of an important city in the state, Duarte Nogueira, from Ribeirão Preto, had already announced his departure.
Morando says he made the decision with sadness. “The PSDB made a huge contribution to Brazil and São Paulo. But the ideals of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Mário Covas, Franco Montoro have long been lost,” he declared.
The mayor complains about the dominance of the party by leaders who, according to him, have no commitment to the party’s history, such as deputy Aécio Neves (MG), president Marconi Perillo
in which former president Marco Vinholi was removed from office to make way for the mayor of Santo André, Paulo Serra.
“It was a sequence of interference and illegitimate actions that deeply harm the values that have always guided the political trajectory. Such practices represent not only disrespect for the members who make up the party base, but also an affront to the confidence of the electorate and the ideals that should guide the exercise of politics and not to defend personal interests”, declared Morando.
