The Santa Catarina MP informed that he will ask the Civil Police to take additional steps
The Public Ministry of Santa Catarina considers asking for the exhumation of the dog Orelha’s body, killed in Praia Brava, in Florianópolis (SC), to clarify “gaps in the investigation”.
The Santa Catarina MP reported that will ask the Civil Police for additional measures in the investigation into the dog’s death. Among the measures, exhumation is one of the options studied.
According to the Public Ministry, the 10th Public Prosecutor’s Office identified gaps that need to be filled in investigating the case after preliminary analysis of the detailed police report.
Both the 10th Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Capital, in the area of Children and Youth, and the 2nd Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Capital, in the criminal area, concluded that there was a need for more clarification and greater precision in the reconstruction of the events.
The MPSC also continues to investigate the possible practice of coercion during the process and threats involving family members of the teenagers being investigated and a doorman at a condominium in Praia Brava.
Last week, the Civil Police requested the hospitalization of the teenager suspected of the dog’s death. As Estadão showed, the Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA), which guarantees fundamental rights to children under 18 in Brazil, does not, however, provide for the hospitalization of young people involved in cases of animal abuse.
Days later, a video released by the teenager’s defense lawyers shows the animal allegedly walking through the streets of the Praia Brava region, around 7 am on January 4, after the time that the Civil Police say the dog was attacked.
According to the Civil Police version, Orelha was attacked in the early hours of January 4th, around 5:30 in the morning, at Praia Brava. According to reports from the Scientific Police, he suffered a blunt blow to the head, which could have been caused by a kick or some rigid object, such as a piece of wood or a bottle. The following day, the animal was rescued and died at a veterinary clinic.
As shown by Estadão, the investigations also found attacks on the dog Caramelo, another community dog that lived in Praia Brava. According to the Civil Police, the animal suffered an attempted attack days after Orelha’s death. Monitoring cameras even recorded the attacks.
