An English court found an Afghan asylum seeker guilty of raping and abducting a minor girl in Nuneaton. The case sparked protests and calls for stricter immigration measures. The convict came to the country illegally just a few months before the crime.
On Tuesday, an English court found a 23-year-old Afghan refugee guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl. He committed the incident last year in July in the city of Nuneaton in central England. The court will announce the amount of the penalty next month. TASR informs about it according to the BBC station.
Asylum seeker Ahmad Muláchil took the girl to a dead-end street on July 22 and committed “extremely horrific sexual crimes”. The court found him guilty of rape, kidnapping, sexual assault and making an indecent video with a girl.
The defendant was not alone
Together with him, 24-year-old Muhammad Kabír, also an Afghan asylum seeker, was indicted. The court found him not guilty.
During the ten-day trial, the victim said that both defendants approached her in the park on swings. She testified that she told Muláchil to stop during the attack, but he allegedly just laughed. The offender told the police that he thought the girl was 19 years old and that she had initiated the sexual intercourse.
Illegal migration in the background of the case
He arrived in the UK in March 2025 on a small boat from France, four months before he raped the girl.
In Nuneaton, the case sparked widespread protests because British authorities did not disclose the immigration status and nationality of the accused men. Both citizens and some public officials have called for changes in the guidelines regarding the reporting of this data on accused persons.
“We will not allow foreign criminals and illegal migrants to abuse our laws. The Home Secretary recently announced sweeping reforms to tackle illegal migration. These will make Britain a less attractive destination for illegal migrants and make it easier to expel and deport them,” a Home Office spokesman said in relation to the case.
