Alckmin: ‘We are against breaking patents on medicines’

The vice-president of the Republic and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin, said this Thursday that his department is against the bill to break the patent of medicines such as Mounjaro currently being processed in the National Congress. He made the statement after a meeting with the executive president of Interfarma, a pharmaceutical industry association.

Last Monday, the 9th, the Chamber of Deputies approved an urgent request to vote on a Bill that would break the patents on medicines such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, known as slimming pens. In practice, the text will be able to be voted on directly in the plenary.

“Our position is the opposite, because we need innovation, we need predictability, we need investments”, said Alckmin, after the meeting with Interfarma. “When you break the patent, you are leading to legal uncertainty, unpredictability, and this deters investment.”
