Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid generated a strong controversy at the 2026 Winter Olympics when he confessed, during a television interview, that he had cheated on “the love of his life” three months earlier. The revelation occurred moments after winning the bronze medal in the men’s 20 km biathlon race.

This week, one of the main protagonists was the Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid who, after winning his first bronze medal in the competition, surprised the public by revealing, during a television interview, that he had betrayed “the love of his life”.

It all started on Tuesday, February 10th, when Sturla Holm Lægreid, aged 28, achieved 3rd place in the men’s 20km biathlon race. Shortly after the competition, in statements to the channel the athlete admitted that there was “someone very special”but added that this person “I probably wouldn’t be watching the test on television”.

“Six months ago I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful”, he confessed.

Sturla Holm Lægreid described the last week as “the worst of your life”since it was during this period that he confessed his infidelity to his ex-partner, whose identity he preferred not to reveal: “I had the gold medal in life and I know there will be many people who will see the situation differently, but I only have eyes for her”he added.

He admitted that, in recent days, “sport had taken a backseat” and confessed that he would like to be able to share that moment with the person in question.

Athlete says he felt pressured

Still during the interview, Sturla Holm Lægreid explained that she decided to speak publicly about infidelity because she felt pressed after receiving the medal. Therefore, he assumed that he had failed in his own values: “I tried to be a good example and I messed up.”

Later, in a press conference, the biathlete admitted that he did not know how to make the situation public “the right choice or not”but justified the decision as a last effort to regain his partner’s trust.

“Today I decided to tell the world what I did, so that maybe she will realize what she really means to me. And maybe not, but I don’t want to think that I didn’t try everything to get her back.”

Ex-partner reacted

The following day, the athlete’s ex-partner spoke to the under condition of anonymity, stating that “It’s difficult to forgive, even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.”

The young woman explained that she did not choose to be in this situation and that it has caused her suffering: “It hurts to have to go through this. We have already had contact and he is aware of my opinion on what happened.”

The athlete then made a direct apology to his colleague and added that he also regrets his ex-girlfriend’s media exposure: “She unwittingly ended up in the spotlight. I hope she’s okay.”

He further added that he intended to put the episode behind him and focus on the Winter Olympics. Three days after becoming the center of attention in the sports world, Sturla Holm Lægreid once again won her second bronze medalthis time in the men’s 10 kilometer sprint race.
