“Welcome to the land of citrus”: passengers heading to Faro Airport will receive oranges from the Algarve for three days

Faro Airport prepares winter with moderate growth, but challenges of diversification persists

Passengers arriving at Faro International Airport in the coming days will find an unusual welcome: oranges offered right in the arrivals area, in an action to promote Algarve Citrus Fruits with Protected Geographical Indication.

According to the Algarve Citrus Operators Association, the initiative begins on the 1st of July and runs until the 3rd with direct distribution of fruit to travelers, then keeping the campaign visible until the 7th of July through panels and billboards near the airport.

The action comes under the motto “Let the Sun in: Welcome to the land of citrus” and aims to associate the arrival in the region with one of the agricultural products most identified with the Algarve territory. The promoting association wants to create a first immediate contact between tourists and local products, in an attempt to reinforce recognition and stimulate future consumption in the visitors’ countries of origin.

Window facing those arriving

The airport’s arrival area was chosen as a strategic point as it is one of the main gateways to the region, especially at this time of year, when the tourist flow increases. The idea is to transform this space into a promotional showcase for Citrus do Algarve PGI, taking advantage of the impact of the first moment of contact with the destination.

The distribution of oranges is just one part of the campaign. The presence of advertising media until the 7th aims to prolong the message and maintain the visibility of the initiative among those traveling in the airport area. The objective is to consolidate Algarve citrus as a regional reference product, associating them with the Algarve’s tourist and agricultural identity.

Ceremony to mark the beginning

The official start of the action will be marked in a symbolic ceremony scheduled for 11 am on the first day, also in the airport’s arrivals area. The presence of José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange, José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve, Fernando Severino, vice-president of the same entity, André Gomes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, and Vítor Neto, president of NERA, is expected.

Citrus has been one of the most representative agricultural products in the Algarve for decades, with strong economic weight and a consolidated presence in national and international markets. AlgarOrange explains that the region’s climate, marked by sun exposure and the natural pace of maturation, contributes to the differentiation of the product, now promoted more directly among those visiting the south of the country.
