Flood in Guarulhos drags woman away and leaves people stranded

There are no records of deaths or injuries in Guarulhos.

A flood hit Guarulhos, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, on the afternoon of Monday, 16th, and left at least four people stranded in the central region of the city. Three cars ended up floating in the floodwaters.

According to the Fire Department, the four victims were rescued and taken to safety.

There are no records of deaths or injuries in Guarulhos.

In total, around 25 people were removed from the affected area, but, due to the urgency of the incident, they had not yet been identified at the time of this writing, in the early hours of this Tuesday.

The flooding was recorded in the vicinity of Avenida Monteiro Lobato, at number 100. According to firefighters, there were people stranded at a gas station and other points in the region. Some of the victims were inside a bus surrounded by water and were also removed without injury.

A woman was swept away by the current and was submerged up to her neck. She was rescued by the rescue team. Images circulating on social media show a person holding on to a car’s rear-view mirror to avoid being swept away by the floodwaters.

Body is found in the capital

In addition to flooding in Guarulhos, a body was found in the Mandaqui region, in the north of São Paulo.

The circumstances of the death have not yet been clarified, and the case will be investigated by the authorities.

Civil Defense Alert

The storm that hit the capital of São Paulo and municipalities in Greater São Paulo also caused 26 tree falls and at least three calls for flooding, according to firefighters. Cell phones in the region received an alert from the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo for heavy rain, lightning, intense winds and the possibility of hail.

At around 4:30 pm, the Climate Emergency Management Center of São Paulo City Hall placed the entire capital on alert for rain and flooding.
