Woman dies after being swept away by floods in northern SP

The city of São Paulo remains on alert for rain showers between the afternoon and evening

A 60-year-old woman was swept away by a flood during the storm that hit the city of São Paulo on Monday, 16. According to the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo, the incident was recorded in the Mandaqui neighborhood, north of the capital.

According to reports from residents, she fell into the water and ended up being trapped under a vehicle. This is the 17th death in the State of São Paulo caused by heavy rains.

According to the state agency, the woman was rescued and taken to a hospital, but did not survive her injuries. With this record, The number of deaths caused specifically by floods in the State rises to eight.

Storm risk

This Carnival Tuesday, 17th, for rain showers between the afternoon and evening, according to the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) of the City of São Paulo.

On Monday, the 16th, the storm caused disruption in the capital and municipalities in the metropolitan region. In addition to flooding, power outages were also recorded. The most affected regions were the north of the capital and the municipalities of Taboão da Serra and Itapecerica da Serra.

In Guarulhos, the flood too. According to the Fire Department, the four victims were rescued and taken to a safe location. There were no reports of deaths or injuries.

  • A woman died on January 16 after her car was swept away by floodwaters in the south zone of São Paulo;
  • A man died on January 25 after being swept away by floodwaters in the north of São Paulo.
  • A man died on January 29 after being swept away by floodwaters in Piracicaba.
  • A woman was the victim of a wall collapse on February 7 in Salto.
  • A head of water caused the death of a man on February 8 in Indaiatuba. The group was working to contain a leak when the sudden increase in water volume overturned the vessel.
  • A woman died on February 16 after being swept away by floods in the north of São Paulo.
