A secret method for an orchid to release flowers. Do this and you won’t get any new buds
Many people believe that these are the most beautiful potted flowers. Not only do they delight with oriental flowers, but they can also bloom for many years. The natural home of orchids is Asia. This is where thousands of varieties of orchids are bred and they are particularly important in culture. In Poland, in pot conditions, the most popular varieties are Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium. Both of these varieties delight with beautiful flowers and can bloom in winter and spring. The end of winter is the best time to stimulate potted plants to bloom better. The season of fertilization and transplanting begins.
In the case of orchids, at the end of winter it is worth using this slightly less known method. It is recommended by professional gardeners and it causes the orchid to produce more buds. Flowering is faster and more abundant.
Winter is the heating season. Dry air is not favorable. Hence the quick soak method. It allows the substrate to properly soak in water, without the risk of overwatering and root rot. In this way, the orchid receives as much water as it needs. The risk of fungi multiplying and mold appearing on the potting soil is also reduced. In the case of quick orchid baths, the coffee method is especially recommended. In a small container, prepare a clean coffee drink (without grounds, sugar and milk) and set aside to cool. There should be 4 parts of water for 1 part of coffee. Soak the mixture in this way for about 15 minutes. This method perfectly stimulates the plant to flower and provides the necessary nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. These elements enhance flowering and support leaf growth processes. Research has shown that regular use of coffee baths for orchids promotes faster development of leaves and flowers.
How to care for orchids in winter?
First of all, watering should be limited and adjusted to the temperature in the room – the colder it is, the less often. It is also important to ensure adequate air humidity, which can be increased by placing the pot on a stand with damp expanded clay or by regularly sprinkling the leaves (avoiding flowers). Remember not to fertilize orchids in winter and protect them against drafts and sudden temperature drops.
How to prepare the soil for orchids?
Proper soil is the key to success in growing orchids. Most species are epiphytes, which means that they naturally grow on trees and their roots need constant access to air. Therefore, traditional garden soil is not suitable for them. The ideal substrate should be loose, airy and dry quickly. Most often, a mixture of pine bark (preferably coarse fraction), expanded clay, coconut peat, and sometimes also charcoal or sphagnum moss is used. Ready-made mixtures available in gardening stores are often a good solution, but it is worth paying attention to their composition to match it to a specific orchid species.
