The evangelical and Catholic parliamentary fronts criticized the president (PT) for satires against evangelical families and announced the request for legal measures against the samba school Acadêmicos de Niterói in Rio de Janeiro.
The discomfort occurred in the “” wing, which portrayed families from groups identified with the right (evangelicals and representatives of agribusiness), like families inside tin cans.
The Evangelical Parliamentary Front to the school’s “disrespectful and offensive conduct” during Carnival. “It is unacceptable that the right to cultural expression is distorted to promote mockery of the Christian faith and open mockery of the conservative values that sustain our society”, says the text.
Representative Gilberto Nascimento (PSD-SP), president of the front, stated that he will contact the (Attorney General’s Office) and the Judiciary to hold those involved criminally and civilly liable. “What we saw was an affront, regrettably financed with public money, by our taxes”, he states.
The samba school received R$1 million from Embratur (Brazilian Agency for the International Promotion of Tourism), the same amount given by the state-owned company to the other schools in the main group of Rio Carnival.
The president of the Catholic Parliamentary Front, deputy Luiz Gastão (PSD-CE), said that he will demand measures and the action of the competent bodies to properly investigate the facts and eventual accountability.
“The Christian faith is part of Brazil’s historical and social identity and inspires values that structure millions of Brazilian families. Representations that can be interpreted as disqualification or ridicule of these convictions do not contribute to the respectful environment that democracy requires,” he stated in a statement.
