The possibility that the United States, under the order of the president, Donald Trumpcarry out a military intervention in Iran, is an idea that becomes closer to reality with every passing minute. It was of little use meeting in Geneva held this Tuesday to address the nuclear issue, since the tension between both states is absolutely palpable. So evident that it is already expressed in the form of portaplanes, troops and other military material around Iran.
So far, Trump has not made a definitive statement about an imminent attack on Iran, but the gestures speak in case the evidence from local media such as CNN or ‘The New York Times’ shows that the US military is taking steps forward to a potential intervention in the Islamic Republic during this weekend.
The troops are prepared to take action whenever the White House sees it appropriate, that is already well known by the Trump Administration. But the Republican does not finish deciding whether this attack should still be carried out, and is weighing the potential political and military risks that giving the final order would have. In fact, according to local media, Trump has shown himself both favorable and contrary to this military actionry about what steps you should take right now.
For now, what there has been is a significant increase in air and naval assets moved to the Middle East in recent days. Accompanied, as usual, by transfer of administrative and diplomatic staff that works in the Middle East region, towards more “safe” areas: especially towards Europe or back to the US. A common practice that does not imply immediate military intervention and that was already carried out in mid-January during the protests by the Iranian population against the regime of the Ayatollahs. On that occasion, it was the personnel of the Al Udeid air base, located in Qatar territory, who were evacuated.
Two aircraft carrier strike groups, more than 50 fighter aircraft, destroyers, cruisers, submarines and dozens of resupply tanker actions. All of them accompanied by aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincolnalready stationed in waters near Iran; and the USS Gerald R. Fordthe most advanced in the world and the same one that was sent to the Caribbean for the military operation that culminated with the arrest of the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro.
This is, according to ‘The New York Times’, the operation with which the White House intends to attack Iran. A show of strength that, in some way, seems to have a deterrent objective and demand the taking of diplomatic actions. In fact, while the Army was sending this fleet, the White House press secretary, Caroline Leavittstated in a press conference this Wednesday that despite the “many reasons and arguments for an attack against Iran”, diplomacy remained the president’s first option.
Proof of this is that, despite having all the pieces on the board, Trump is seriously considering what his first move will be in the region. He is in constant and fluid conversations with the Army and, apparently, it would be this weekend when he finally makes his move. However, according to a close source consulted by CBS News, the final decision could even last until next week. What seems clear is that the republican does not want to rush when carrying out an attack that will end up occurring.
But Trump’s patience is finite, and according to a White House official told the American media Axios, the Republican “is getting fed up” with this scenario. For this reason, there are those who warn him “that it would be a bad idea” to go to war against Iran, “there is a 90% chance” that direct military action will take place in the coming weeks.
Even so, given the possibility of an imminent attack for which there is no clear date, ‘The New York Times’ points out that the Israeli army is also preparing its troops for a potential war against the Islamic Republic. One of the main rivals in the region for the Prime Minister’s Government Benjamin Netanyahuwhom the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will visit in a couple of weeks. Therefore, Israel’s security cabinet plans meet on Sunday to also prepare a possible joint attack with the United States.
In fact, sources consulted by this same medium say that, if finally carried out, this two-band attack could last for several days with the in order to force Iran and the Ayatollah Regime to make more concessions on their nuclear program. The main reason for concern for the US and Israel – and the ultimate reason for this military deployment – which was addressed this Wednesday during a meeting in Geneva between the special envoy Steve Witkoff y Jared Kushnerson-in-law of the Republican, and an Iranian delegation. Some talks that, although they resulted in small progress and both parties defined as successful, did not serve to reduce tension in the Middle East.
Faced with the military escalation, far from remaining impassive, Iran held naval maneuvers this Thursday together with Russia in it Strait of Hormuzthrough which much of the world’s crude oil trade passes. Some maneuvers where it has also carried out ballistic missile launch tests. As reported by the news agency of the Iranian Revolutionary GuardIRNA.
Faced with the mobilization of the US army, far from appearing intimidated, on Wednesday the Ayatollah Ali Khameneileader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, published an image made with artificial intelligence in which the sunken aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford appears, along with a message that read: “Of course a warship is a dangerous military element, but “More dangerous is a weapon that can send you to the bottom of the ocean.”.
