To guarantee a majority for deputy Odair Cunha (PT-MG) in the dispute for a place in the (Court of Auditors of the Union), the Lula government has encouraged more candidates to run.
Opposition and centrão parties, such as PL, and União Brasil have already declared that they will not vote for the PT member, despite an agreement signed with the president of the Chamber, (-PB), at the end of 2024. And they decided to launch their own candidates
—this one, with less support. Despite the fierce dispute, government officials see the fragmentation as an opportunity to guarantee votes, since there is no second round.
The dispute is for the vacancy of minister Aroldo Cedraz, who is compulsorily retiring at the end of February. Voting is expected to take place next week.
The preference for Odair is The government supported Motta’s candidacy for president and, in return, asked for a guarantee of votes for the PT member when the vacancy arose.
The group that made the agreement, which includes other left-wing and even centrist parties, such as the PP (Progressive Party), which has 301 votes. The problem is that the vote is secret and the deputies are already counting on betrayals.
But they also don’t rule out defections on the other side. Even so, a government member said, with reservations, that whoever is ahead always has the most to lose.
