Approximately 100 canceled flights were related to Austrian Airlines. Several morning arrivals were diverted to nearby airports. During the rest of the day, further delays or flight cancellations cannot be ruled out. The restrictions affected approximately 13,000 passengers.
The heavy snowfall also caused significant complications in road and rail transport. The important highway bypass around the Austrian metropolis was partially closed, several roads in higher elevations were also impassable.
In Tyrol, an avalanche hit a company bus carrying employees and pushed it off the road. According to a police spokesman, none of the 12 passengers were injured. In Styria, approximately 30,000 households were left without electricity after the severe wet snow damaged several transformer stations. Repairs should last the whole weekend, power outages were also reported from other parts of the country.
Rescue services, firefighters and police have been on continuous deployment since Thursday evening. The authorities repeatedly call on residents to limit travel to a necessary minimum and to respect the issued warnings. Heavy overnight snowfall also disrupted operations at the airport in Munich, Germany. The airport management has warned on its website that arrivals and departures may be delayed or cancelled.
