The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, banned the circulation of vehicles in the city from 9 pm local time this Sunday (22) until noon on Monday (23) due to the arrival of a snowstorm. In a social media post, Mamdani stated that “this snowfall is serious” and asked residents to stay at home. According to him, it is the “first day off due to snow in seven years” in the city.
The US National Weather Service predicts between 45 and 60 centimeters of snow in New York, with the possibility of 70 centimeters in some spots, winds of up to 112 kilometers per hour and the risk of blackouts and coastal flooding. Municipal public schools will not have classes on Monday.
Public transport suspended
The state governor, Kathy Hochul, declared a state of emergency and activated 100 members of the National Guard. In New Jersey, the local government suspended all statewide public transportation and declared an emergency. Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have adopted similar measures.

At JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports, airlines such as Delta, American Airlines and United Airlines have suspended operations. According to the FlightAware monitoring platform, more than 3,500 flights were canceled throughout Sunday. American Airlines reported that it only expects to resume on Tuesday (24).
