The man allegedly in Palm Beach, Florida is a 21-year-old from North Carolina named Austin Tucker Martin, according to a source close to the investigation.
Martin had been reported missing in recent days, the same source said.
Secret Service agents and local police officers shot and killed him when they spotted him at the north gate of Trump’s residence around 1:30 a.m.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt commented that the Secret Service “acted quickly and decisively to neutralize a lunatic armed with a rifle and a gas canister who broke into President Trump’s home.
The security services have not disclosed any information about the motive of the attacker. The investigation has been taken over by the FBI, and its director, Cash Patel, wrote in a post that the agency is “dedicating all necessary resources” to the investigation.
Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said he spoke with Trump after the incident and thanked the Secret Service for protecting the president and his family. “We don’t know if this person was the mastermind, if he was mentally disturbed or what exactly he was,” he told Fox News.
