The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, arrived in Kyiv to commemorate four years since the beginning of the Russian invasion and to confirm the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday morning on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. TASR informs about it.
“Four years of unjust aggressive war. Four years of unshakable Ukrainian courage. Four years of unwavering European support. One common determination: to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. That is why we are here today in Kyiv,” Costa wrote on the X social network.
EU support for Ukraine
Von der Leyen reminded that she has been in Kyiv for the tenth time since the beginning of the war. “To confirm that Europe stands steadfastly behind Ukraine, financially, militarily and during this harsh winter,” she noted. She emphasized that peace must be achieved on Ukraine’s terms.
Both EU representatives will take part in an official commemoration ceremony in Kyiv to mark the anniversary of the start of the war and visit the site where Russian missile attacks damaged the energy infrastructure. They will also meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and later take part in the so-called coalition of the willing. This meeting is to reaffirm the commitment of the participating countries to support Ukraine in achieving a lasting and just peace and in strengthening the security of Ukraine and the whole of Europe.
The EU supported Ukraine with billions
Since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, the EU has provided €194,900,000,000 in aid to Ukraine, the European Commission said. The adoption of the 20th package of sanctions against Russia was supposed to confirm the bloc’s continued solidarity with Kyiv, but the member states have not yet agreed on its approval. In addition, Hungary announced that it will block an already agreed loan to Kyiv in the amount of 90 billion euros for the years 2026 to 2027.
