Federal government sends SUS and Civil Defense teams to help Zona da Mata Mineira

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced this Tuesday morning (24) that the federal government sent teams from the SUS National Force and the National Civil Defense to the region of Juiz de Fora (MG) after heavy rains that have already left at least 16 dead in the city of Minas Gerais.

“During a stopover in Abu Dhabi, I became aware of the situation of families in the Zona da Mata Mineira after the heavy rains of the last few hours. And I determined the prompt mobilization of the Government of Brazil to assist the population of the region. A coordination team from the SUS National Force is already on its way. And the National Civil Defense, in addition to having already sent professionals to the Zona da Mata, is working on high alert and in permanent contact with the Civil Defense of Minas Gerais”, stated the president in a post on social media.

The president also stated that the federal government recognized the state of calamity in Juiz de Fora, which will be published in the Official Gazette later this Tuesday.

“In the coming hours – and days – we will remain ready to act with the speed and strength that the moment demands. Our focus is to guarantee humanitarian assistance, the reestablishment of basic services, aid to homeless people and support for reconstruction”, he wrote.

The Minas Gerais Fire Department confirmed that 16 people died as a result of the heavy rains that hit Juiz de Fora.

The corporation also reported that four other people died as a result of heavy rains in the city of Ubá, also in Zona da Mata, around 110 kilometers from Juiz de Fora.

According to municipal management, the search for missing people continues this Tuesday, the 24th. In total, 251 incidents related to the rains were recorded.
