Son and daughter-in-law let 98-year-old woman starve to death tied to bed

The Judiciary Police arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of murdering a 98-year-old woman in Setúbal. The victim is the suspect’s mother and died of starvation in bed.

The 60-year-old man and the 62-year-old woman, the victim’s son and daughter-in-law, respectively, are suspected of an crime of “consummated homicide” about the 98-year-old woman, according to the Judiciary Police (PJ).

The victim was found dead on December 12th, at her son’s residence in the municipality of Setúbalafter an alert from the PSP to the PJ who went to the location.

“The death occurred in a situation of great suffering and lack of minimal care hygiene, food and health, for conscious omission by the suspects”, points out the PJ.

“Demented and totally dependent”the elderly woman “lived, over the last few months, with broken femoral headbedridden, without her family “caregivers” worrying about her well-being, deliberately leaving her to fend for herself, the consequence of which was death”, says the Judiciary.

The adds that the elderly woman was found “tied to the bed”with “bruises on the body and face”, and that “there was blood on the clothes and on the walls of the room”.

The two detainees were present at their first judicial interrogation and were in preventive detention.
