On Wednesday, a police operation took place in the Zábřeh district of Ostrava targeting an armed man who barricaded himself in his apartment. However, after several minutes of unsuccessful negotiations, the lawmen found him without signs of life.
According to the station’s findings the man had previously shot his partner. The police handed over the injured woman, who was conscious, to the doctors. He remains in critical condition after suffering a serious gunshot wound to the torso.
“In Ostrava-Zábřeh, we have taken measures against a man who is supposed to be armed. We have secured a secure perimeter and all available forces and resources are on the scene, taking the necessary steps to ensure safety for the public.” said police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková on Wednesday morning.
Rescuers later confirmed the shooting in the housing estate, in which a woman was injured. “Her life is in danger. The rescuers handed her over to the care of the Ostrava University Hospital,” said the spokesman for rescuers, Lukáš Humpl. Even though the victim was shot, she was conscious when taken to the paramedics.
Local residents were warned by text messages not to go out, while the police cordoned off the entire zone. “Informative SMS was sent to residents of the given location with safety instructions,” added Michalíková. Around 11 o’clock, the police informed the journalists present that the danger had already passed.
The regional police director of the Moravian-Silesian Region, Tomáš Kužel, specified that they first tried to communicate with the man for a long time. However, when the emergency unit broke into the residence, they found the attacker dead. According to Kužela, the suspect possessed the weapon legally. The preliminary investigation shows that the tragedy was preceded by an argument between the partners in the common household.
