Senate bars breach of confidentiality in Moraes’ wife’s office

The Senate Attorney’s Office concluded that breaking the confidentiality of Viviane Barci de Moraes’ law firm is not recommended, which motivated the Parliamentary Investigative Committee on Organized Crime not to proceed with the request against the wife of the Federal Supreme Court minister, Alexandre de Moraes.

At the beginning of the week, the Commission approved a list that expanded the scope of those being investigated. In addition to the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court and the head of the Central Bank, Gabriel Galípolo, the CPI had included Viviane, the chief minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, and the commander of the Army, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva.

Reports obtained by CNN Brazil indicate that the legal guidance was accepted by the president of the collegiate, Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES), who decided not to put Viviane’s request to a vote in the last session.

The unexamined requests against Viviane, presented by senators Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE) and Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) requested the Financial Activities Control to send RIFs (Financial Intelligence Reports) and break the company’s banking, tax, telephone and telematic secrecy between January 1, 2022 and January 27, 2026.

Behind the scenes, the reading is that the call of Moraes’ wife to the scope of the CPI in the eventual breach of secrecy could shake the already fragile relationship between Congress and the Supreme Court.

Approved summons

On the afternoon of Wednesday (26), by close votes, the former president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and Jair Bolsonaro’s former Economy Minister, Paulo Guedes, were summoned to give testimony on the Banco Master case.

Both depositions were authorized after close votes, by 6 votes to 5. The individual deliberations were motivated by a request from the opposition, which tried to block the summons.

The collegiate also approved the summons of businessman and owner of Banco Master, Daniel Vorcaro, requested by the CPI rapporteur, Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), together with senators Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) and Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES), but there is still no set date for the hearing.

The former CEO and partner of Banco Master, Augusto Ferreira Lima, were also summoned; Ângelo Ribeiro da Silva, also a partner; the executive superintendent of the bank’s Treasury, Alberto Félix de Oliveira Neto; and the former Director of Risks and Compliance, Luiz Antônio Bull.
