Ed Matthews (58) became one of the thousands of men affected by the so-called “silent killer” – prostate cancer. He initially referred to his frequent trips to the toilet at night as just the result of “drinking too much”, but a routine medical check-up in April 2025 revealed a life-changing diagnosis, he reports
After the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test results showed a value of 4.2, Ed was referred to a urologist. Subsequent MRIs and a biopsy confirmed prostate cancer, just three weeks after his routine check-up. Ed underwent robotic surgery to remove the cancer in July 2025 and is healthy today.
The investment banker from London admits that the diagnosis was an emotional shock. Before his illness, he was fit and healthy, avid golfers and skiers, and his world was suddenly turned upside down. This experience inspired him to raise awareness about prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men and is often overlooked. Ed plans to run the London Marathon to support organizations focused on this type of insidious disease and other health initiatives.
His daughter Maddie, 20, will be joining him as he aims to raise funds for Dementia UK and Dean House Care Home in honor of his grandmother, who died of dementia last year. Ed emphasizes that his story is a testament to the importance of early detection of prostate cancer and the difference that early detection can make in saving lives. Today, she combines treatment with activism and spreading awareness about the disease.
