Don’t let the name fool you, as its seeds are not edible. The time for sowing sweet peas in the ground is approaching. Check how to do it to enjoy it on your plot.

Sweet peas are annual, whose natural habitat is the Mediterranean basin. However, it is cultivated in many countries as ornamental plant. It is also popular in Poland and can be grown both directly in the ground and in pots. It is a beautiful decoration not only of the entire garden, but also of the terrace or balcony.

Sweet pea flowers have a papilionaceous structure and can come in many colors. We can find sweet peas with purple, pink, white, blue and red flowers. Some varieties produce bicolor flowers.

It is a vine that can grow up to 1.5-2.5 meters. It requires support – otherwise it will fold on the ground and not look as good. Sweet peas are also known as sweet peas.

Sweet peas are best sown directly into the ground in March or April. The most important thing is the weather – the risk of major frosts must pass. The seeds are placed in the ground at a depth of 1-2 cm, leaving a space of about 20 cm between them. If we soak them in water a few hours before sowing, they should germinate faster.

There is also an alternative – the seeds can be sown as seedlings in pots. Then you can do it from mid-February and in March. Ready seedlings should be placed in the garden only after spring frosts – usually in mid-May. Earlier sowing makes the plants stronger, grow faster and bloom earlier.

In a pot with a diameter of 9 cm, make recesses of about 2 cm and put a seed into each of them, and then cover them gently with soil. Then you need to water the substrate from below in such a way that the moisture reaches the top layer. Up to 4 seeds can be sown in one pot of this diameter.

Growing sweet peas in the garden is not difficult. You just need to remember a few important rules. Sweet peas do not like dry, cold and wet soils. The land for cultivation should be fertile, permeable and humus, with an alkaline or neutral pH.

In the garden, choose a sunny, warm and wind-protected location for cultivation. The soil for cultivation should be moderately moist, so it is necessary to fertilize it regularly watering sweet peas – especially during drought. It is also worth doing it every 2-3 weeks fertilizing sweet peasusing multi-component fertilizers for flowering plants (with low nitrogen content).
