Iran is escalating retaliatory attacks and says it does not want a war in the Persian Gulf. The West fears a wider catastrophe

Iran, which has been carrying out retaliatory attacks in the Middle East since the weekend after strikes by the United States and Israel, does not harbor hostility towards the Persian Gulf countries. This was stated on Monday by the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Arakchi, TASR reports based on reports from the AFP agency.

“Iran does not harbor any animosity towards the Gulf countries and is determined to develop good neighborly relations with them,” Arakchi said during a phone call with his Chinese ministry partner Wang Im.

A call for reconciliation

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araqchi stressed that “Iran’s defensive response (directed) against US military bases” in the Persian Gulf should not be seen as an attack on the states of the region.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on Tehran to stop these attacks. In an interview with Italian television TG5, Meloni said that “the aim is to prevent the crisis from spreading further. However, nothing can improve if Iran does not end its completely unjustified attacks against the Gulf countries.”

Fear of conflict

At the same time, Meloniova declared that the international community cannot afford the current Iranian regime to have long-range ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads.

The Italian Prime Minister went on to say that she is concerned about the “overall context” and the “crisis of international law” which she considers to be the result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to her, it was expected that this situation would lead to a new wave of chaos.

The situation in the region

Iran’s attacks in the Persian Gulf have raised fears of a wider conflict and shaken a region long seen as an oasis of peace and security in the turbulent Middle East. Iran attacks not only military bases in the Persian Gulf, but also civilian infrastructure.

These attacks are in retaliation for a coordinated wave of attacks on Iran launched on Saturday, February 28, by the US and Israeli militaries. About 40 high-ranking officials of the regime lost their lives, including the supreme spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Their deaths represent the biggest blow to Iran’s power structure since 1979.
