Haddad: decision on candidacy will only be made after meeting with Lula and Alckmin

The decision on the role of Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad (PT), in the October elections will only be taken after a meeting with President Lula (PT) and his vice president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB).

Possibilities include running for Palácio dos Bandeirantes or the Senate for São Paulo. In a press conference this Monday (2), Haddad stated that the meeting was requested by President Lula last week.

“The president told me at dinner last week that he should ask for a meeting with vice-president Alckmin and me so we can talk about the situation in São Paulo. So far there has been a lot of good conversation, but we will make a decision a little later as soon as the meeting takes place”, said Haddad.

The interview with the head of Finance took place before the minister participated as a speaker in the FEA-USP (Faculty of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Science at the University of São Paulo) master class.

He and the vice-president will participate in agendas alongside President Lula on Tuesday (3). Despite the meeting in São Paulo, the minister denies that the meeting about this year’s elections will take place during the meeting.

The minister again declared that he had announced at the beginning of the year that he had no intention of participating in this year’s election, but that he also cannot disregard Lula’s request and the scenarios presented.

“I, obviously, being a friend of so many years, cannot do without his opinion [Lula] about it. I’m analyzing it, so is he, we’re going to reach a common denominator”, concluded Haddad.
